Amazon Held 48% of eReaders Market Share in 2010 Due to Kindle 3

International Data Corporation (IDC), worldwide quarterly media tablet and eReader tracker has released a report on the tablet and eReader sales performance through 2010. iPad led the sales in the tablets category and Amazon’s Kindle won the eReader race.

Q4 2010 saw 10.1 million media tablets being shipped, more than double the 4.5 million shipped in Q3. Though Apple’s market share came down from 93% in Q3 to 73% in Q4, it was way ahead of competition throughout the year. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was a strong contender in the holiday season, capturing a 17% market share. The season also some regional players join the game. Almost 89% of the shipped units went to United States, Western Europe and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) regions.

Pandigital Novel ereaders gain Android apps

Want an ereader that’s more than an ereader? Users of pandigital‘s 7-inch Novel can now download and run Android apps.

Although tablet devices like the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab can function as ereaders as well as tablet computers, one complaint about dedicated ereaders is that they often lack the extensibility and flexibility of tablets—and it’s particularly galling when they run a capable operating system under the hood. Looking to tap in to—or perhaps ease—that frustration, Pandigital has announced a firmware update to its 7-inch Pandigital Novel ereaders the enabls users to download and run Android applications to extend the functionality of their devices.

When it comes to e-readers these days, most of the action here in the U.S. seems to be concentrated around the Kindle, Nook, and iPad. But every week or so, we’ll notice a traffic spike on CNET for an e-reader that isn’t from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Inevitably, this is due to a special discount that some store is running on the product or perhaps even an appearance in a Best Buy circular.

US Makes up 75 Percent of Global E-Reader Market

US Makes up 75 Percent of Global E Reader Market

Considering how many people I know with e-readers these days, I can’t say this piece of news from Publishing Perspectives was that big of a surprise.

According to the Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, published by International Data Corporation (IDC). US-based Apple and Amazon are the leading global vendors of tablet computers and e-readers. Meanwhile Barnes & Noble barely beat out Sony by a nose to become the number 2 and number 3 global vendors of e-readers. That leaves Sony neck and neck with Chinese-producer hanvon in distributing e-readers, at the number 4 and 5 spots.

Qualcomm with Mirasol technology – big promise for color in e-readers

Qualcomm with Mirasol technology big promise for color in e readers

At last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Cheryl Goodman answered questions from visitors at Qualcomm’s booth about a demonstration e-reader using the company’s Mirasol display screen technology.

The device showed cached content that, while fast at changing screens, wasn’t that much different from the Mirasol demonstration that Qualcomm did the year before CES.

There were no announcements at the show about the customers who would use Mirasol displays in an e-reader coming to market or how much such a device might cost, which was one of the big questions for Qualcomm leading up to CES this year.

review of the Pocketbook PRO 902

Hardware

The Pocketbook PRO 902 is a 9.7 inch e-reader with a resolution of 1200×825 and 166 DPI. At its core it features a Samsung, 533 MHz processor and has 256 MB of internal RAM. It also has 2 GB of internal FLASH memory and you can further enhance it for up to 32 GB via the micro USB port.

Internet connectivity of the new Pocketbook 902 is done via WI-FI, and will connect to open and secure networks. We found connecting to longer password protected networks with a combination of upper and lowercase letters to be very hard to get correctly. There is no way for passwords to be visible as you are typing, so it is very easy to make mistakes.

Users will be able to set line spacing, font, words per line and much more, all via the browser. Plus, books can be viewed in full colour, with rich, detailed pictures and additional content.

I have to admit, the NookColor is going from “another eReader” to “full fledged tablet” at a rather astounding rate. The NookColor is now able to utilize the Kindle app available in the Android Market after you have completed the rooting process.

Wonderfully enough, that’s not all. This process also gives you access to GMail, YouTube and a few other Google apps that you NookColor users were shut out of at launch.

The New York Times has been highlighting a new trend. With all the Kindles, Nooks, iPads, and whatnot being unwrapped on Christmas day, (to home in on just one of those devices, they say Amazon may have sold over 8 million Kindles this year), what was once a day of rest from shopping is likely to be a booming day for ebook sales. Some in the publishing industry are even beginning to see the ebook emergence as a ray of light in a stagnant industry.
