When it comes to e-readers these days, most of the action here in the U.S. seems to be concentrated around the Kindle, Nook, and iPad. But every week or so, we’ll notice a traffic spike on CNET for an e-reader that isn’t from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Inevitably, this is due to a special discount that some store is running on the product or perhaps even an appearance in a Best Buy circular.

Qualcomm with Mirasol technology – big promise for color in e-readers

Qualcomm with Mirasol technology big promise for color in e readers

At last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Cheryl Goodman answered questions from visitors at Qualcomm’s booth about a demonstration e-reader using the company’s Mirasol display screen technology.

The device showed cached content that, while fast at changing screens, wasn’t that much different from the Mirasol demonstration that Qualcomm did the year before CES.

There were no announcements at the show about the customers who would use Mirasol displays in an e-reader coming to market or how much such a device might cost, which was one of the big questions for Qualcomm leading up to CES this year.

review of the Pocketbook PRO 902

Hardware

The Pocketbook PRO 902 is a 9.7 inch e-reader with a resolution of 1200×825 and 166 DPI. At its core it features a Samsung, 533 MHz processor and has 256 MB of internal RAM. It also has 2 GB of internal FLASH memory and you can further enhance it for up to 32 GB via the micro USB port.

Internet connectivity of the new Pocketbook 902 is done via WI-FI, and will connect to open and secure networks. We found connecting to longer password protected networks with a combination of upper and lowercase letters to be very hard to get correctly. There is no way for passwords to be visible as you are typing, so it is very easy to make mistakes.

The New York Times has been highlighting a new trend. With all the Kindles, Nooks, iPads, and whatnot being unwrapped on Christmas day, (to home in on just one of those devices, they say Amazon may have sold over 8 million Kindles this year), what was once a day of rest from shopping is likely to be a booming day for ebook sales. Some in the publishing industry are even beginning to see the ebook emergence as a ray of light in a stagnant industry.

Hanvon to release Color e-Reader with e-ink

10x1108ob23mmn76 Hanvon to release Color e Reader with e ink

Hanvon is no stranger to making e-readers, they have made plenty, including the Wisereader N518. Drawing on their experience they are set to release one of the first pure e-ink electronic readers, sometime in March 2011.

Plenty of color e-readers are out already including the pandigital Novel or the Sharper Image Literati, but they are LCD based instead of true e-ink. E Ink screens have two advantages over LCD — they use far less battery power and they are readable in the glare of direct sunlight.

New, inexpensive color e-readers have Android under the hood

By Ryan Paul | Last updated 28 days ago
Although Google’s Android mobile operating system is principally designed for phones, it is also increasingly showing up on low-cost tablets and other kinds of mobile devices. The platform is rapidly emerging as a major contender in the e-book reader market, where it is attracting a growing number of hardware vendors.

Barnes and Noble’s popular Nook is arguably the most prominent Android-based e-book reader, but there are also a number of intriguing offerings from other vendors. Some are differentiating their readers by eschewing battery-friendly e-ink in favor of color LCD screens. These products take a more tablet-like approach and give users the advantage of a multifunction Internet-enabled device at nearly the same price point as regular e-book readers.
