Library Offers 2,000 Free E-Books and a Class for New E-Readers

Wondering how to best use the e-reader you got for Christmas? The library will hold a class in January to better acquaint patrons with its e-book resources.

If you want to get the best use out of the new e-reader you got for Christmas, there’s help at the Northville District Library.

Northville residents have access to more than 2,000 free e-books at the library’s Download Destination website. The website allows readers to download e-books, as well as audio books and music, instantly to their computers for up to three weeks — all without spending a dime.

Random House ready to help new e-reader owners ‘curate’ their e-book collections

If you’re lucky, you might be getting a new e-reader as a holiday gift this year. 2010′s “Year of the Tablet” might have fizzled but e-readers (led by the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook and supplemented by hardware that doubles as an e-reader, such as Apple’s iPad and just about every smartphone sold this year) seem to have quietly gained a lot of traction. Back in November the NY Times ran an article that claimed e-readers were going to be a hot gift this holiday season.

Coby Kyros Internet Tablet Features 7-inch Screen, $192 Price Tag

Another day, another tablet. This time around, it’s coming from Coby. The Kyros Internet tablet is a touchscreen device that’s running Android under the hood, and there’s a few features in the small package that may interest anyone out there who’s not wanting to go the mainstream route. Unfortunately, it’s not a powerhouse, so it won’t be winning any rewards any time soon for the speed it possesses.

Switched On: Getting from Kno to yes, part 2

The last Switched On introduced the opportunity of the Kno tablet, which is in transition from having a large hardware footprint to having a large customer footprint. Without question, the Kno hardware is an outlier, but could be simply a first salvo in a battle for digital textbooks that will take years to play out.

Look at the ironic development of e-readers. Today’s LCD-based Nook Color would not exist if Sony and Amazon had not opened (and soothed) consumers’ eyes with e-paper-based readers that were themselves an answer to an early generation of LCD-based products like the Rocket e-Book. The outlier shows the potential.

Barnes & Noble launching Nook Kids this week, set to be the Nook Color’s killer app?

nook color 2010 10 25 225 Barnes & Noble launching Nook Kids this week, set to be the Nook Color’s killer app?

Say what you want about the current spate of e-books, few will do anything to hold the interest of your three-year-old nephew. To those who like to keep peanut butter and jelly out of the keys if their Kindles that’s a good thing, but for Barnes & Noble that’s a business opportunity waiting to be tapped. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company will soon launch Nook Kids, a dedicated collection for young readers expected to start with an impressive selection of 12,000 titles. Many of those will be “enhanced,” like the book Jamberry, having one page with falling blueberries that kids can pop with a tap. That seems to be further proof of a full touchscreen on the rumored Color Nook, expected to be unveiled this Tuesday. Later in the year look for a Nook Kids app on the iPad and other devices, so now might be a good time to start teaching little Joey about regular hand cleaning.

Kindle DX trial at Darden concludes it’s academically woeful, personally enjoyable

10x0513ib235trial3 Kindle DX trial at Darden concludes its academically woeful, personally enjoyable

Amazon’s experiment of replacing textbooks with Kindle DXs in classrooms already took a pretty hefty blow from Princeton’s feedback — which described the jumbo e-reader as “a poor excuse” for an academic tool — but here comes some more punishment courtesy of the trialists at Darden. The Business School describes the DX as clunky and too slow to keep up with the pace of teaching, with up to 80 percent of users saying they wouldn’t recommend it for academic use. There is a silver lining to this cloud of hate however, as up to 95 percent of all project participants would be happy to recommend the Kindle DX as a personal reading device. That meshes rather well with the high satisfaction and sales figures e-readers are enjoying, but it does show that the hardware has a long way to go before it convinces us to ditch our paperbacks.

Borders’ Kobo eReader available for pre-order, ships June 17th

Looking for a no-frills alternative to the Kindle or Nook? For $150, you’ll probably find it in the Kobo eReader — now available for purchase at Borders, and shipping June 17th. We went hands-on with Kobo in March and rather enjoyed the barebones aesthetic; though an early review cited long load times, we thought the 6-inch E Ink slate got the basics just about right. That’s just us, though — if you get it for Father’s Day as Borders clearly suggests, we’re not sure your picky old man will agree.
