Bookeen’s Orizon is the slimmest e-reader

Guess which is the world’s slimmest e-reader. Chances are that you might blurt out a Kindle or the Nook simply because these sell more than anything other e-book reader out there. Or perhaps you aren’t too cared about their thickness simply because they already are slim enough to not to bother you much about their overall thickness. As things stand now, almost all the latest e-readers have reached the stage of being convenient and comfortable enough to the extent of nobody being too cared of that. But then, here is one company for which the slimness of the e-reader does matter and is willing to push the envelope further.

The device offers 2.25 times the reading area when compared to the popular 6-inch eReaders available in the markets these days. The device comes equipped with a SiPix electrophotoretic display which offers near instant page turns. Another advantage is that the display draws power only when changing its image.

BeBook Club ereader

BeBook has produced some great ereaders in its time. But as we sit with the really quite nice BeBook Club ereader in our hands we wonder if the company, and others like it, can survive.

There’s nothing much wrong with the BeBook Club in itself.

The on board memory, at 512MB isn’t very generous. While it will store up to 1000 ebooks we are used to seeing more on board storage. You can bump it up with SD cards, though, so really that grumble has little traction. Another grumble is that the use of microUSB rather than miniUSB for charging the battery seems very old fashioned.

Google to Launch E-Book Store

Google (GOOG) will launch its digital bookstore in the U.S. by year-end, according to an official at the company. Whether it can compete with similar services from Amazon (AMZN) and Barnes & Noble (BKS) remains to be seen. The e-book industry is already crowded and many of the millions of e-book readers have already made a choice about which “library” to use. Amazon has a collection of 750,000 titles, which will be hard to match.

The waves of publicity generated first by Amazon’s Kindle and follow-up devices such as the Nook and Galapagos, and now by tablet devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and the upcoming BlackBerry Playbook, have made e-book readers among the most discussed (and debated) tech items of the last couple of years. Although e-books are undoubtedly going mainstream, there’s still a debate that centres on whether the portability, storage capacity and sheer convenience of e-book readers makes them a viable alternative to real books.

Disposable Nooks and Kindles may one day become as commonplace as throwaway cameras, thanks to a discovery by an engineering professor at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Electrical engineering professor Dr. Andrew Steckl discovered that paper is actually similar to glass in host material capability. He used a process called electrowetting (which adds electric fields to color droplets), a variation of the technology behind current e-ink screens..

After demonstrating his findings so far, Steckl predicts that the displays on the paper would be fast, full-color and would last a user up to seven days before needing to be binned.

E-readers could mean $1B for chip makers in 2011

The e-reader market is projected to represent a $1 billion opportunity for semiconductor suppliers next year, according to a forecast by market research firm In-Stat.

Shipments of e-readers from suppliers such as Amazon.com Inc., Barnes & Noble Inc. and Sony Corp. are projected steadily from 12 million units in 2010 to 35 million units in 2014, according to In-Stat (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

“The e-reader creates new opportunities for microprocessor and memory vendors,” says Stephanie Ethier, as In-Stat senior analyst, in a statement. “The processor ASP will be the most resilient over the forecast period, only declining 18 percent from 2009 to 2014.”
