Barnes & Noble has released a new app for the iPad entitled Nook Kids. The new app provides thousands of children’s books in digital form on the popular Apple e-reader.

The app opens up Barnes & Noble’s massive catalog of children’s content to iPad users and includes over 100 interactive children’s books as well. As part of the promotion for the new app, customers will find two free children’s books in their digital library after signing up. The chosen books are Richard Scarry’s “Colors” and Rudyard Kipling’s “The Elephant’s Child.”

Barnes & Noble Nook Color revealed

Barnes & Noble just unveiled its all-new Nook Color, an Android tablet fronted by a 7-inch color touchscreen… so long, e-ink! (Not really, the $149 original Nook is sticking around for now, owns 20 percent of the e-reader market, and is about to get a major software update). B&N is billing it as a hybrid of e-reader and tablet device, and has beefed up its software with a full-on tablet-style UI, along with Facebook and Twitter integration. There’s built-in WiFi (802.11b/g/n) and 8GB of storage, but no 3G at this point. Thankfully, the price stays aggressive as a result: $249. You might think that means the screen is going to be weak, but B&N has managed to put an impressive-sounding “VividView,” 16 million color, 1024 x 600 IPS display in this thing. Interestingly, there’s a “full lamination screen film” on top of the LCD to reduce glare, apparently from the backlight, not just from external light sources.

The device combines the simplicity of a wireless e-reader with tablet functionality, said William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble, during a launch event for the device in New York. The next big step in e-books has been color, and users and publishers have asked for it, he said.

$99 Color E-Reader and Social Platform to Challenge Amazon, B&N This Fall

Following recent price cuts on Amazon’s Kindle 2 and Barnes & Noble’s Nook, a new manufacturer is set to stir up even more competition in the e-reader pricing wars with the debut of a $99 color device this fall.

The device, which weighs in at .42 lbs and features a 5-inch, 800×480-pixel, color LCD display, 2GB of storage, 64MB of RAM, 2G of Flash Memory and up to four hours of battery life, is just one in a line of devices Copia, a subsidiary of DMC Worldwide, plans to introduce.

Color eReader in 2010 a virtual certainity

A Color eReader release in the US in 2010 is becoming extremely likely. Color eReader implies

  1. It’s focused on reading.
  2. The screen technology supports color and also has ePaper qualities.

We are excluding the iPhone, the iTablet and other multi-purpose devices, devices with LCD screens, and even ‘Dual mode’ and ‘Dual screen’ eReaders.
