Rollable iPads and E-readers – Future Technology

The University of Cincinnati (UC) and industry researchers reviewed the technologies that will bring devices including: rollable iPads, e-readers and virtually indestructible e-sheets. UC provides the top ten list of electronic paper devices that consumers can expect both near term and in the next 10 to 20 years.

* Color e-readers will be out in the consumer market by mid year in 2011. However, UC researcher Jason Heikenfeld cautions that the color will be muted as compared to what consumers are accustomed to, say, on an iPad. Researchers will continue to work toward next-generation (brighter) color in e-readers as well as high-speed functionality that will eventually allow for point-and-click web browsing and video on devices like the Kindle.

Sagem Wireless, a manufacturer in the design and development of customized connected devices and services, has launched Binder – an ultra-light eReader.

Delivered to customers as a white-labelled product, the eReader can be ordered today from FNAC, the leading French retailer, as the “FnacBook” and in November through Telecom Italia as part of its digital publishing and eBook project.

The Binder measures just 152mm x 123mm x 10.7mm, making it smaller than an average paperback book – but with memory capable of storing over 12,000 non-illustrated books.  It combines e-paper technology together with embedded 3G and WiFi connectivity to create an eReader that delivers a true “library in your pocket” user experience.

Asus DR-950: Yet Another eBook Reader That’s More Impressive Than the Kindle

500x asusnew Asus DR 950: Yet Another eBook Reader Thats More Impressive Than the Kindle

Out of nowhere, Asus has announced two promising eBook readers. The first had an OLED screen. And now their second reader, the DR-950, promises less color but still appears to be at least a generation beyond any Kindle.

Just look at the screen to case ration of the DR-950—it’s within reason, like a painting wrapped with a frame. That’s a 9-inch, 1024×768 display in the middle, yet the DR-950 manages to be but .35-inches thick.

Inside, the 950 houses anywhere from 2-4GB of storage, an SD card slot, Wi-Fi and HSDPA, the potential for WiMax, 3.5mm headphone jack and USB.
