Over the past decade, a revolution in medical imaging has allowed researchers to scan the brain of subjects in situ, while setting their minds to an assigned task. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) are revealing, among other discoveries, that the brain of some apparently vegetative patients can be active; the brain’s ability to heal and grow well beyond what was previously believed; and the various centers of different behaviors and skills.

Coming wave of e-reader releases promises hot competition, growing e-book market

The Sony Reader, an electronic reading terminal currently being sold in the U.S. and elsewhere, will be released in Japan in December, Sony Corp. has announced.

In addition to two Reader models from Sony, Galapagos e-readers from Sharp Corp. and Galaxy Tab e-readers from Samsung Japan Corp. are also expected to go on sale next month, about seven months after Apple Inc.’s May iPad launch. With the number of e-reader options increasing, competition is likely to heat up and boost the spread of electronic reading devices and e-books.

More Choices, Lower Prices This Holiday Season

By Roger Fidler, RJI Program Director for Digital Publishing

Updated: November 23, 2010

What a difference a year has made for e-reading and digital publishing.

Last year at this time, Barnes & Noble, Sony and iRex were promising to give Amazon’s wireless Kindle e-readers some competition.

Their promises turned out to be premature. Only Amazon was able to guarantee delivery in time for holiday gift giving.

This holiday season, Amazon is certain to have some competition from B&N and Sony as well as from Kobo and a more formidable vendor — Apple. (iRex dropped out of the e-reader market in March.)

CATCH-22 by Joseph Heller Finally Arriving as an eBook

CATCH 22 CATCH 22 by Joseph Heller Finally Arriving as an eBook

The most famous piece of work from author Joseph Heller is finally coming to the world of eBooks. Simon & Schuster recently concluded over a year of negotiations with the late writer’s literary agency to release “Catch-22” as an eBook.

Heller released the original book, through Simon & Schuster, in 1961 and provided readers with a satirical look at war. With the 50th anniversary of the release of the original book approaching, S&S were hoping to release the book for eReaders.

Black Friday eReader Deals – Sub-$100 Nook Wi-Fi, Kindle 2 and More

There are a ton of Black Friday deals on eReaders, not just from the usual suspects but also from electronics and big box discount stores. But remember: just because an eReader is affordable doesn’t mean it’s desirable. Do your homework before you go busting down doors for some cheap eBook reading devices. We’ve reviewed several of them, and that’s always a good place to start. Don’t forget to read our guide to finding the best eReader. It has good tips to help you determine if the one you find in the store is the right fit.

Barnes & Noble Nook Color Unboxing & Hands-on

The Barnes & Noble Nook Color is the first second-generation Android-based ereader. Its predecessor was an e-ink screen designed for longer battery life and less strain on the eyes during long-term reading sessions, but the Nook Color is a departure.

The 16-million-color screen with VividView provides a more traditional reading experience with twists. It offers color photographs and charts that would lose meaning on an e-ink display, and a variety of controls for note-taking, highlighting, or bookmarking. You sacrifice the battery life of e-ink, but gain color-based features that are otherwise lost.

Sony Reader Coming to Android platform in December

Reading on your mobile device is becoming more and more popular as we enter the digital age. Currently there are many eReader options available for Android devices but Sony is now going to enter the eBook market with their “Reader” application.

Nothing revolutionary here but another option for eBooks is always welcome. You can make bookmarks, notes and adjust font size as you read and new books will be purchased through the Reader Store.

Looks like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders and the countless other eReader apps just got another source of competition.
